Funny how right after the snowstorm, when the streets gleamed with blinding white snowdrifts, strangers would make way for each other on the suddenly narrowed sidewalks. Some would even smile and say “hello.”

Now that the snow has become tired, encased in a sorry layer of street smut or encroaching over the sidewalk as a manacing coating of ice, strangers wedge each other against dirty snowdrifts as they try to pass over the still-narrow pedestrian ways. The novelty of the blizzard has worn off.
