dining al fresco

Everyone had arrived early to see the free performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Common, which meant that many had to forgo dinner in order to get good seats. People traversed the crowded lawn, plastic bags, takeout containers, or picnic baskets in one hand, the other juggling a cell phone in an effort to locate friends. Groups sat next to each other on blankets and rented chairs — strangers enjoying a meal together, apart, as a nearly perfect dusk settled over the park.
