finding the true gems in my CD collection

On the first snow day of 2011, I finally took on a long-languishing resolution: alphabetizing my CD collection, from Abolition to Yo La Tengo.

At this point, it seemed almost comical to organize the shelves full of jewelcases, frozen from the moment that I finally decided to stop buying physical discs (apparently, the final album was Brothers by the Black Keys, from a weak moment during last year’s Record Store Day).

However, I quickly discovered the true gems among the dusty plastic: the mix CDs that I have made for friends, and they for me. Reliving the care with which they were assembled is a feeling that can’t be digitized.
