holden caufield

When I was in high school, I had a tendency to pour over the liner notes of the bands I loved, and so it was when I discovered “Who Wrote Holden Caufield?” on Greenday’s Kerplunk. The song seems to be written as a plea to Holden to get it together, and the chorus includes the lines, “There’s a boy who fogs his world and now he’s getting lazy/he has no motivation and frustration makes him crazy.” My mom, an English teacher, was teaching The Catcher in the Rye to a bunch of unruly freshmen at the time, so in an attempt to forge a bond between our diverse musical and cultural tastes (and make Mom seem cool to those bratty freshmen), I took a shot and presented the song and liner notes to her. To my surprise, she was delighted, typed out the lyrics, and borrowed my CD to play for her class. This morning, the song came up on my iPod, and now I wonder if it’s really just about pot.
