I’ve been a little bit obsessed with hair cuts as of late, so it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’m fascinated by Michelle Obama’s new ‘do.
It really has no recent precedent, and I can’t stop looking at it. (Is it short? Is it long and tucked under into a subtle bun? Is it even flattering?). While watching news reels from her recent trip to India, I started to worry that the First Lady has drifted off her path as practical trend setter (e.g. J-Crew inaugural outfit, White House vegetable garden, etc.).
However, then I remembered: Michelle Obama is a firmly established tastemaker. This isn’t a salon misstep; it’s a no-nonsense do for the global traveler. We all likely will be mimicking it tomorrow. It’s a valuable tenet to consider when thinking about one’s own position as a brand. When attempting to pull off a revolutionary idea, perhaps it’s worthwhile to ask ourselves, “Are we Michelle Obama, and is this a Michelle Obama haircut?”
