On an E Line train, inbound, during rush hour, I watched as a 20-something guy with gleaming, natural red hair boarded to my left. He had a hand-written scribble on his arm: a reminder to register.
A few stops later, I caught the edge of a huge portfolio in my right periphery. It belonged to a girl, obviously an art student. She also carried an L.L. Bean messenger bag, and in the blank pale space on its two-colored striped flap, she had artfully doodled to make the bag her own. On her arm were the words, “print photos.”
As more people boarded and the train grew crowded, these two strangers unknowingly edged towards each other. As I got up for my stop, I wished for them a lifetime of happiness together.
